Abstract
This paper reviews high-voltage technology in marine electric propulsion systems, focusing on 6.6kV to 11kV architectures, power converters, power quality, and podded propulsion. Based on literature synthesis and illustrative calculations, the paper clarifies the links among voltage level selection, converter topology, harmonics, insulation coordination, and propeller load characteristics. The electric propulsion offers flexible machinery arrangement, high redundancy, low vibration, low noise, and good maneuverability, while practical performance depends strongly on control, protection, and cable reliability. In this paper, the term high-voltage is used in the technological sense of propulsion systems employing substantially higher onboard voltage levels than traditional low-voltage ship systems, rather than as a direct restatement of shore-power voltage-class nomenclature.
Keywords: Marine electric propulsion; High voltage; Medium-voltage drives; Azipod.
