Abstract

Omnidirectional mobile robots are a promising solution for warehouse logistics systems owing to their high maneuverability and flexible motion in confined spaces. In particular, three-wheeled omni robots can move in multiple directions without changing their body orientation, making them well suited for material transportation tasks in warehouse environments. However, achieving precise control of such robots remains challenging, since the overall motion of the system depends critically on the coordinated velocity regulation of the individual wheels. Small velocity deviations at each wheel may accumulate over time, thereby degrading trajectory-tracking accuracy and increasing the risk of collision during operation. To address this issue, this paper proposes a fixed-time fractional-order sliding mode controller for an omnidirectional mobile robot to enhance trajectory-tracking performance in the presence of external disturbances. Closed-loop stability is rigorously established, while guaranteeing fixed-time convergence in the presence of external disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through numerical simulations and comparative studies against a conventional sliding mode controller, a finite-time backstepping controller, and a traditional proportional–integral–derivative controller, thereby demonstrating clear improvements in trajectory-tracking accuracy, convergence speed, and disturbance rejection performance.
