Abstract: The research on the microstructure formation of carbonitrided surface layers for steel hoisting machine shafts focuses on investigating the thermochemical heat treatment process for SCM420 steel to enhance the wear resistance and fatigue strength of hoisting machine components,. The experiments were conducted at a temperature of 840°C for 3 hours using available industrial gas mixtures. Experimental results across different gas compositions (from C1 to C4) revealed significant changes in both microstructure and hardness,. Samples C1 and C3 achieved optimal efficiency, featuring a fine martensitic structure combined with dispersed carbide and nitride phases, resulting in high surface hardness (up to 65 HRC) and a core hardness that met the requirement of approximately 45 HRC,,. Conversely, sample C2 exhibited high retained austenite content, which reduced surface hardness, while sample C4, due to excessive gas, led to the formation of non-martensitic structures,. The study concludes that maintaining a /gas ratio between 0.8 and 1.8 enables the establishment of an effective carbonitriding medium using domestic gas sources, ensuring technical quality and optimizing production costs for hoisting machine shafts
