Abstract
Ship ballast water is a major vector for the global spread of invasive alien species, posing serious threats to marine ecosystems. This study provides a preliminary evaluation of the inactivation of the indicator microorganism Escherichia coli in simulated ballast water using TiO₂-coated quartz wool photocatalytic material under UV-C irradiation. The material was synthesized by wet impregnation and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD results confirmed the presence of anatase TiO₂ on the quartz substrate, while SEM images showed relatively uniform TiO₂ coating at 3-5% loading and particle agglomeration at 10%. Experiments investigated the effects of irradiation time (60-120 min) and salinity (0-30‰) on treatment efficiency. Using HP5, E. coli density decreased from 10,000 CFU/100 mL to 5,000 CFU/100 mL after 120 min, corresponding to 50% removal and approximately 0.30 log10 reduction. Treatment efficiency declined with increasing salinity, with only about 0.05 log10 reduction at 30‰, consistent with chloride competition and hydroxyl-radical scavenging. The results indicate that the UV/TiO₂/quartz wool system is a potential subject for further ballast-water-treatment research; however, the present efficacy remains below the BWM Convention D-2 requirement and requires optimization of UV dose, reactor configuration, catalyst loading, salinity control, and statistical validation.
