Abstract

Bilge water in ship engine rooms is a complex mixture of water, oil, and contaminants, posing challenges for treatment prior to discharge. According to the MARPOL Convention, bilge water must be processed through an Oily Water Separator (OWS) to ensure that oil content does not exceed 15 ppm. However, in practice, the presence of emulsified oil and cleaning chemicals often reduces OWS performance, leading to bilge water accumulation.

This study proposes a forced evaporation method to reduce the volume of bilge water requiring onboard treatment. A rectangular evaporation tank using saturated steam heating coils combined with forced ventilation is designed for practical ship conditions. Results show that, with a tank volume of approximately 1,05 m³ and saturated steam at 0.5 MPa, the system can achieve an evaporation capacity of about 480 kg/day. The use of a ventilation fan with a flow rate of approximately 2700 m³/h enhances heat and mass transfer, reduces condensation, and improves evaporation efficiency.

The study also proposes procedures for system implementation, operation, and Oil Record Book entries in compliance with MARPOL. The findings provide a practical and technical basis for applying bilge water evaporation as a supplementary solution to improve onboard bilge water management.
